The Coppell Cowboys and Cowgirls faced one of their strongest fields of the season Saturday at the Coach T Marcus Invitational. With some of the top cross-country programs in the state competing, the meet gave Coppell an opportunity to see where the team stands early in the season.

Coach Wren came away encouraged by what he saw across the different divisions, from a young Elite Varsity Girls team continuing to develop to a strong sixth-place finish by the Elite Varsity Boys.

“Overall, I saw a lot of good things from the kids this meet,” Coach Wren said. “I said I wanted to see where we stacked up against some of the best teams in the state, and I feel like we represented Coppell HS well. This is always a challenging meet, and I feel like our kids were up to the challenge.”

Individual and Team Highlights

Elite Varsity Girls

Coppell’s Elite Varsity Girls team was made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores, giving the young runners another opportunity to compete against a large and talented field.

Finleigh Sanders led the Cowgirls, finishing 62nd out of 298 runners. Rachel Stumm, Anusha Patki, Mirabelle Sagel and Charlotte Baade rounded out Coppell’s top five.

“After looking at the times, I feel like this year's team is ahead of last year's team at the same point of the year,” Coach Wren said. “The girls continue to work hard every week in practice and continue to get better. I am also pleased with the development I'm seeing from our younger girls.”

Elite Varsity Boys — 6th Place Overall

The Elite Varsity Boys turned in one of Coppell’s strongest team performances of the day, finishing 6th out of 48 teams, despite missing some key contributors from last season.

Sidharth Kerthipati led the Cowboys with an impressive 11th-place finish out of 385 runners, completing the course in 15:08.

“He looked really good today,” Coach Wren said.

Itsuki Pena, Alesh Khowala, Abishek Suresh and Tanish Neelapu rounded out Coppell’s top five.

“The guys that ran on this team really stepped it up and showed some good potential,” Coach Wren said. “We have some depth on the boys' side of things, and the kids are competing every week to earn a spot on Varsity. Once we get healthy, I expect us to do some really good things.”

Boys Teams Continue to Improve

Coppell also saw progress throughout the other boys divisions. The Varsity Boys Open team finished 19th out of 40 teams, while the JV Boys Elite placed 8th out of 19 teams and the JV Boys finished 5th out of 10 teams.

Individual standouts included Lukas Stumm, Nolan Reeder, Vihaan Sapkota, Sandre Houdier and Shourya Bingi.

“I saw a lot of improvement today from our first meet,” Coach Wren said. “The boys have bought in and it shows.”

Girls Teams Continue to Grow

The Varsity Girls Open team finished 19th, while the JV Girls Elite team placed 12th.

Coach Wren continues to see progress from both the older runners and the younger athletes gaining experience each week. Vanini Agarwal, Adeline Mendola and Sehbin Lee were among the individual standouts.

“The older girls are continuing to work hard daily, and I'm seeing real growth from many of the younger girls,” Coach Wren said. “I really like where our girls' team is right now.”

Looking Ahead

Next Saturday, Coppell heads to Myers Park for the McKinney Boyd Invitational. This meet will be especially important for the Cowboys and Cowgirls because they will return to the same course later this season for the District Meet.

“We run at the McKinney Boyd Invitational next week at Myers Park,” Coach Wren said. “This is an important meet for us because this is the course where our District Meet is being held. I can't wait to watch our athletes attack that course next Saturday.”

With another competitive meet behind them, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will take what they learned at Marcus and turn their attention toward getting familiar with the course that will matter later in the season.
